Robots were not able to become the force they are today without the invention and subsequent reliance upon linear actuators, equipment which has greatly increased our abilities in terms of what functions can be carried out where. Actuators are pieces of equipment which allow for a much greater degree of control over the speed and precision of certain movements. Having these makes building robots which are more suited to their tasks much easier than before, as we can now create robots which are suited to delicate tasks.
As a result, our ability to build and use robots has changed greatly, with a corresponding effect on how robots are used within our lives as a whole – they already form a huge number of our production lines in car making and other manufacturing, but the increase in their ability to undertake more delicate and precise tasks means that we are now looking to incorporate robots further afield, in industries such as medicine and hospitality, among others.
Since the field of robotics is one which has yet to be fully realised, there is a lot we don’t know about how the inclusion of robots into everyday life will change things. Nevertheless, there are some things we can say for sure.
Robotics is something which is a huge field of research in and of itself, but robots are changing the world in their own way, by changing the way in which we can conduct research altogether. The military is the biggest industry to use robots in this capacity, as robots can be used under conditions which would be hazardous or untenable for humans to be under.
Their ability to research is compounded by the way in which robots can be made. They can simply be information gatherers which operate under their own power, or (with the addition of artificial intelligence) they can be researchers in their own right, not simply gathering information for the use of humans, but drawing their own conclusions about it also.
Security is currently handled by either a home security system (if it is a private residence), or by human security guards (if it is a private enterprise or a large public space). Robots represent the possible changes which can be made to either of these scenarios. A robot is made out of materials which are generally more durable than humans are, and they can be designed to be stronger and faster than humans too. Where humans are fallible and may miss things, a robot is much less likely to do so, which means that any security handled by robots has the potential to be more secure than if it were handled by humans alone.
Security is something which can take delicacy, and this is something where robots can have the advantage. Humans can only disguise themselves and their intentions so far, but if we decide to put security in the hands of robots, we have the ability to design them to quite literally blend in with the surroundings because we can make them part of the surroundings unless there is a situation where they are required.
Progressive automations means that robots can be fitted with a variety of abilities which it can call upon if the need arises. If the situation requires finesse, then finesse can be applied, but if the situation requires greater strength, it can be applied too.
